When I shared a painting with an artist friend last year, he had one comment, "Shapes."
I immediately knew what he meant. I was getting bogged down in the fussy, picky details of the thing I was painting, which did not make for an interesting work of art.
When I start painting, I often get stuck trying to make it look like the thing. This is especially hard to avoid when painting outdoors, "plein air."
